The Bali Pavilions: Villa Living at its Best

For all the hordes of tourists that visit Bali every year, Villa Living is more of the norm than the exception. With ease, this Balinese way of life for local residents and travelers has influenced the design elements and character of resorts around the globe, even here in our country. Having that in mind, we made sure that we got to experience the best of villa living for our 5-day vacation in the world's second best island. (T + L recently released that our own Boracay has topped the list).

My friend Nivat Chantarachoti, who used to be the General of Thai Airways in Bali (and Manila), was invited by one of his friends to stay at a luxury resort called the Pavilions. His friend Il Soon happened to be the maitre de maison of the said resort. Nivat asked me if I wanted to transfer from our current villa to the Pavilions. Of course, that was an invite I could not refuse. We gave a big resounding YES!

The Pavilions is ideally located in Sanur, an old fishing village in Bali. Compared to areas like Kuta and Seminyak, Sanur is relatively more quiet and more relaxed. From the outside, you won't even know that beyond the sign, there's a private enclave that will show you what beautiful villa living can do for the mind, body, and soul.

As soon as you step into the Pavilion grounds, you'll notice the bamboos that line the entrance of the resort all the way to the reception area. I'm glad the resort has a considerable distance from the main road since that adds more to its privacy and charm.

The Pavilions has a modest and minimalist reception area designed by the Maitre de Maison herself.

The resort is a proud member of Relais and Chateaux, a collection of luxurious and unique properties in the world. It's all about character, individuality, and shared passion for the finer things in life. This association of establishments go beyond standardized and predictable chain hotels. The Pavilions in Bali will give you just that.  The resort will let its guests have an experience that is rooted in the authentic essence of Bali.

THE VILLAS:

The Villas of the Pavilion have the perfect touch of Balinese and modern elements. We stayed at one of the one-bedroom villas. To make one's stay personalized and memorable, the sign above your villa's door is named after the guest (or any name as per request). It would feel like you never left home.

The living room is spacious with a relaxing tropical atmosphere.

Obviously, this destination resort is meant for honeymooners.

A sliding door that brilliantly hides the kitchenette.

I never get to use any of these outdoor tubs during my travels. Well, there's always a next time.

Unlike big chain hotels, the resort has its own bath products. Usually, I would expect something from L'occitane or Molton Brown.

With permission, I also got a chance to check another villa in the resort. This is Honeymoon Villa. I hear that some couples decide to stay here for two weeks to one month. They MUST really love it here.

The bathroom space is more than generous.

AMENITIES/FOOD:

The Poolside Cafe and Bar is ideal for sipping cocktails before sunset. You can also decide to eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner here after a quick swim.

Sometimes, things just seem to good to be true.

Subdued lighting in the evening.

For breakfast, if you are lazy, you can decide to have the food delivered straight to your villa. Nothing is better and more luxurious than butler service. Spoil yourself!

Otherwise, you can eat at the main restaurant of the Pavilions called Jahe. The Jahe (which means ginger in Balinese) restaurant offers the best cooking in Bali. They serve authentic and delicious food that come from the region's finest ingredients. They also have an extensive wine list that would At night, this is transformed into one of the most romantic settings in Bali.

On our first night, we had dinner with Il Soon and Phil, the new GM of Thai Airways in Bali. It was refreshing to be dining with the resort's GM since the the creative process would all go through her. With her experience living in Paris and as a restaurateur in Hong Kong, you expect exceptional food from the kitchen. During our conversation, it occurred to me that I liked the idea of managing a small luxury hotel myself if the right time and opportunity would present itself. Think of it as a "retirement" work.

I loved everything they served - from the Gyoza to the dessert.

Nothing but the freshest ingredients for you.

With The Pavilion's maitre de maison Il Soon Kang and my two friends, Nivat and Phil - General Manager of Thai Airways in Zurich and Bali, respectively.

The Pavilions in Bali is definitely your home away from home. With its outstanding location in Sanur, reasonable prices and five star service, I'm not surprised why its loyal patrons always choose this property.

Tip: If you want a more practical yet still a  luxurious way to experience Bali, it might be best to rent a whole villa with a group of friends. They are scattered all over Bali. We stayed at our friend's private villa for the first few days. I cannot disclose the rates for this specific villa but for the other other ones in the area like Uma Villas, you can rent a a villa for four people and pay only $400-500 per night. If you want to get your money's worth, renting a villa would be the best way to go about it. It would look something like this.
